1. What are the common eye problems?

The most common eye diseases include eyestrain due to myopia, hyperopia, red eyes, sty, blepharitis, conjunctivitis,  cataract, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, uveitis, corneal ulcer, diabetic retinopathy, colour blindness, night blindness, etc.

2. What is a Lazy eye?

A lazy eye usually occurs in childhood when a child’s eyesight does not develop as it should in one eye. It is also known as amblyopia and the symptoms include blurred vision and poor depth perception. It cannot be corrected completely later in adulthood hence important to check regularly in the preschool and primary school years of the child.

3. What is Cataract?

A cataract is the most common cause of vision deterioration in people over age 40. It is defined as the clouding of the normal lens of the eye. Its symptoms include blurred vision, sensitivity to light, fading or yellowing of colours, occasional double vision, glare and difficulty at night driving, need for brighter light for reading, etc.

4. How is cataract surgery done?

Cataract surgery is an outpatient/daycare procedure in which the eye surgeon removes the clouded lens and replaces it with a clear artificial lens also called an intraocular lens. The surgery is performed under local anaesthesia. After the surgery, recovery of vision is dramatic however you will have discomfort for the initial few days.

5. What is LASIK surgery?

LASIK surgery is the best and most common laser refractive surgery performed to correct vision problems.  Laser-assisted in situ keratomileuses (LASIK) are done to treat myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Glaucoma is a group of various eye conditions that damage the optic nerve which is usually caused by abnormally high pressure in the eye. It is more common in people over age 60, but it can occur at any age. Its symptoms include patchy blind spots in your eye, severe headache, eye pain, blurred vision, eye redness, etc.

7. What is Conjunctivitis and how is it treated?

Conjunctivitis also called pink eye is an inflammation of the conjunctiva (transparent membrane) that lines the eyelid and covers the white part of the eyeball. It is caused due to bacterial or viral infection and it is contagious in nature. Pink eye can be treated using artificial tears, antibiotic eye drops in case of bacterial variant, cleaning your eyelids with a wet cloth and giving rest to eyes.

8. How long does a viral eye infection last?

Viral eye infections are highly contagious, depending on the viral strain they may remain contagious for up to 10 to 12 days after the onset of symptoms.

9. What are the symptoms of an eye infection?

The symptoms of eye infection include pain, itchy eyes, light sensitivity, burning eyes, a small, painful lump under the eyelid, swelling on the eyelid, etc.
